Second album from this retro hard rock band led by Wicked Minds guitarist Lucio "Swan" Calegari. The band is fronted by female vocalist Monica Sardella and she fits the music perfectly in a Robert Plant/Geddy Lee kind of way.

Debut album from this Italian crossover band. Secret Tales is not traditional rock progressivo italiano style of music. This blends together symphonic rock, medieval and Celtic folk, and maybe even some subtle touches of metal around the edges (but barely).

"Sometimes, a band faces some adversities that delay the chance to release its hard work to the public. Not many, anyway, can "boast" what progressive rock dinosaurs Spettri have experienced.

There is clearly an Italian prog sound. Often referred to as Rock Progressivo Italiano or "RPI" it typically features symphonic sounding keys, dramatic, often operatic vocals, and classical undertones.

Il Ludere is the third studio album from the Italian "RPI" band led by the talented keyboardist Elisa Montaldo. The album is subtlely different from the previous two efforts. First off we find Mattias Olsson (ex-Anglagard) behind the drum kit.

Black Widow seems to have a penchant for releasing bands along the lines of Ramrod so I suspect its a popular style in Italy. What are we talking about exactly? Bluesy psychedelic tinged hard rock fronted by a female singer.

By now everyone knows that Cherry Five was the precursor to Goblin before they signed with Cinevox. Original drummer Carlo Bordini (of Rustichelli - Bordini fame) and vocalist Tony Tartarini have formed a new version of the band.

"The history of this Italian band goes back to the early 80's, but the debut album came out in 2011, and now is the third album out. A new acquaintance for me, and a pretty pleasant one. Neo prog is not very typical subgenre in Italy, even less in Black Widow Records.

Third album from this superb offshoot from Runaway Totem. Universal Totem Orchestra is an interesting amalgam of various influences. Fronted by the operatic vocals of Ann Torres Fraile the music has very strong zeuhl undercurrents but you would be hard pressed to call UTO a Magma clone.

"A singular and rare neogothic concept album combining the sound of a grand pipe organ with the typical progressive rhythm section: “The Legend of the Holy Circle” is the second concept album from the italian band Three Monks after their debut album “Neogothic Progressive Toccatas” published in

This was always a weird but charming album. Recorded on a low rent budget in 1977, Akasha made this one and done album. The album kicks off with a lengthy track loaded with 'tron. The rest of the album is full on prog rock with lots of wacked out twists and turns.

Lemures is the new studio album from Gianni Leoni's current version of the band (now a trio). Straight away this is not Ys. Also its not particularly commercial either. It does have the darkness of Ys but the music is synthesizer driven and perhaps a bit experimental in nature.

"Recorded in 1975 this is the ideal follow-up of 'Tardo Pede In Magiam Versus.' Fiamma Dallo Spirito was the lead vocalist on this Jacula album and Federico Bergamini wrote most of the music.

Latest album from this Italian band that has roots that go back to the 70s. The band always wears their hearts on their collective sleeves. Its a balancing act between 70s "Rock Progressivo Italiano" and British hard rock.

One of the better current RPI bands going are back after a six year absence. The origins of the band date back to 1974 but didn't release their first album until 1999. This has got "the sound" - Hammond organ is ever present and some beautiful guitar leads and violin through out.

"Giancarlo D'Auria aka Gigi Pascal was a pop singer from Naples, already pursuing a solo career from late-60's.Faithful in the melodic pop field,Pascal also tried his luck in the rock field,as the Italian Prog scene was emerging in early-70's.For this reason the group Gigi Pascal e la Pop Compagn

A few years ago we were graced with a nice archival discovery courtesy of Esoteric Recordings. Black Widow Records has now come out with a vinyl edition. Fields was the post-Rare Bird trio consisting of keyboardist Graham Field, ex-King Crimson drummer Andy McCullough, and bassist Alan Barry.

Second release from this interesting Swedish retro-prog band. Plenty of old school prog sounds with some psych elements as well. The music has a dark noir-ish quality that reminds a bit of the first couple Riverside albums - just in terms of the overall vibe.

"A new interpretation of a classic RPI title! This is quite an undertaking, but it comes off in an outstanding way, giving new life to old friends. In contrast to so many reworkings of old pieces that I've heard in recent years, this one does not leave me only wishing to listen to the original.
