"It's hard not to like Raven Sad. This is another generous album, at almost sixty-eight minutes, but it's one that really knows how to breathe. They're an Italian progressive rock band formed in 2005, even if they don't often sound like they're an Italian progressive rock band.

Maxophone was one of the great "one and done" bands of the Italian scene. They recorded one great album in 1977 (some of you may be familiar with their English language version) and then imploded like countless other prog bands did in 1977.

Essentially Stepps was a later incarnation of Snakes Alive. Again bassist Michael Vidale is on board. The sound changed from Snakes Alive but in an interesting way. The music now has a really strong affinity to the Canterbury sounds.

This young Swedish band's trademark is their glorious harmonies (everyone in the band sings). The more I listen to their third album, the more I pick up vocal references to other bands like The Hollies and 10cc. Its this sweet, mellifluous quality that really sets them apart.

Indexi were certainly one of the best prog bands from former Yugoslavia. You'll hear a bit of a Yes influence particularly from the bassist who seems to have a bit of a Chris Squire fetish. No complaints!

The Czech Republic didn't have a lot of symphonic prog bands but they did have a few. Progres 2 was one of the best. This double album is a conceptual work that translates as The Third Jungle Book. Hard band to compare to a Western European counterpart.

Modry Efekt started out as Blue Effect and by the time of Svet Hledacu they were called M. Efekt. All the same and all led by the incredible guitarist Radim Hladik. Svet Hledacu was the band's next to last album.

"In the wake of the classic Something/Anything came A Wizard A True Star (73); Todd (73); Utopia (74); Initiation (75). If Another Live (75) had been expanded and taken into the studio, it too might have been another classic.

"Barren Earth took me completely by surprise. As a rule I do not post reviews of records from labels that do not send me promos of them. I think it’s a disincentive for them to do so and generally bands don’t deserve the promotion.
