This is one of those overlooked gems that only hardcore prog collectors know about and with good reason. The band was signed to the obscure Square Records label and purportedly only 1000 copies were pressed back in 1971. OK - so what hell does it sound like? Basically a head on collision between ITCOTCK King Crimson and The Moody Blues. The album is drenched in Mellotron. flute, and sax leads channeling Ian McDonald. Yeah its a concept album that you'll find a bit corny at this point but probably seemed like a great idea at the time. So the story ended for these guys in the typical fashion - bad management, bad decisions, and a bad contract. The band dissolved after the one album and the rest is history. Definitely up there with Spring, Cressida, Fantasy and their ilk. Apart from Czar and the later day Australian band The Moffs, I can't think of a band that bore such a strong musical similarity to the first iteration of Crimson. Highest recommendation.

    A new Glass Hammer is like a universal constant.  I can always expect exemplary old school prog rock.  For an old timer like myself Glass Hammer is right in my wheelhouse.  This is their 17th studio album (amazing!) .  If you are unfamiliar with the band you should know it revolves around the core of bassist Steve Babb and keyboardist Fred Schendel.  There have been a lot of musicians through the doors of their studio over the years but somehow they always seem to find an endless supply of them.  The line up seems to be fairly stable at the moment.  Salem Hill mainman Carl Groves handles lead vocals along with Susie Bogdanowicz returning as well.  Guitars are handled by Kamran Alan Shikoh and drums by Aaron Raulston.Glass Hammer music is a reverential amalgam of Yes, ELP, Kansas and what the hell throw in a little bit of Genesis.  Steve and Fred proudly wear their influences on their sleeves.  Want wicked keyboard pyrotechnics?  Fred brings the thunder.  In fact they all do.  The Breaking Of The World arrives with epic length tracks and audiophile quality sound.  I wouldn't want it any other way.  BUY OR DIE!

    Christina Booth is the charismatic vocalist for British symphonic rock band Magenta.  Her voice has always brought about comparisons to Annie Haslam (and in fact they recorded together).  Christina had a well documented successful battle with breast cancer.  It was during this time that she wrote the material for her second solo album.  The music doesn't have the complexity or full on "prog" nature but she is helped out by members of the prog community including Rob Reed, Chris Fry, JOhn Mitchell, Andy Tillison, and Theo Travis.  It would be difficult to call this commercial music.  I guess they call this adult alternative these days.  Its a great showcase for her wonderful vocal talents and is filled with tons of atmosphere.  Good late night listening.

    This must be the 100th version of this great album to see CD.  This is a new digipak version on Cleopatra.  Remastered, it includes a bonus album - the rare Drum Circus "Magic Theatre" which was a precursor to Brainticket."Second album from this seminal Swiss psych band. Led by keyboardist Joel Vandroogenbroeck, Brainticket's overall sound is a bit hard to pinpoint. The band touches on psych but prog as well. One tends to think of them as a psych/krautrock band and that really isn't that too far off the mark. The band incorporates blissful tripped out serene moments juxtaposed by ripping lead guitar. Organ swirls, flute accents, and wasted female vocals are the order of the day...there is even a bit of a west coast psych feel that barely creeps through. I bet these guys would have gone down a ton at the old Fillmore West. The Brainticket catalog has been available as a budget line release from Bellaphon for many years."

All the drums have been re recorded by new drummer Jan Vincent Velazco, and the whole album has been remixed by Karl Groom and Nick Barrett."Disc 1Belle AmeBeautiful SoulCome Home JackIn BardoFaces Of LightFaces Of DarknessFor When The Zombies ComeExplorers Of The InfiniteNetherworld Disc 2 Live At TwigsThe VoyagerA Man Of  Nomadic TraitsThis Green And Pleasant LandNostradamusPaintboxKing Of The CastleIndigo FreakshowMasters Of IllusionSpace CadetEdge Of The WorldIt’s only MeOur original write up:Its been three years since the last Pendragon album.  To be honest I hadn't checked in on them in quite some time so it was interesting to listen to their latest - it was very different from what I expected.  Guitarist Nick Barrett has gone all Roger Waters on us - he wrote all the music and lyrics - so this really has evolved very much into a personal vehicle for him.  The usual bandmates of Peter Gee and Clive Nolan are on board and now joined by new drummer Craig Blundell.  Men Who Climb Mountains is a concept album but Barrett isn't spelling it out - you're going to have to work at this one.  The musical mission of the band has clearly changed over the years.  Don't have any hesitation - its full on prog but much more contemporary sounding.  The symphonic flourishes from the old days aren't quite so obvious - which isn't to say you won't notice Clive Nolan's presence.  Its simply that this is a bit more of a guitar driven vehicle than decades ago and Barrett's mournful solos have that nice Hackett-esque feel that always draws my attention.  I have to say I'm impressed.  Highly recommended.
