I Am The Weapon (Digipak)
"Flotsam and Jetsam are back again with another new album; it doesn’t seem like its been three years already but it has. I must say that these guys are on a serious roll here with their last few being really strong albums and getting that push by their label. I also believe social media, the necessary evil, helps reach a larger audience. It’s good to see this happening to a band that has seriously paid it’s dues. I Am The Weapon is the band’s sixteenth album and this pretty much picks up where Blood in the Water left off, which is fine by me.
Straight out of the gate they grab you by the throat with “A New Kind of Hero.” I really enjoy this style of power thrash because it has the melodies of power metal with the riffage of thrash. Eric AK sound as fresh as ever and he still has a lot of power in his voice. In fact, he shines just a bit better on this album than on the last so he seems to be getting better. The chorus on this is and melodic as is with most power metal but the riffs slay. “Primal” follows and is another riff fest with a chorus that kind of reminds me of German power metal as does the solos that follow. The title track rounds out the opening trio and this is mostly a pure thrash slayer. Even when they are trying to smash your teeth in with their riffs, the melodies are infectious enough for you to allow them to pummel you while you ask for more. The solos are godly AF and add just one more thing to love about their approach.
After the opening trio gets you primed and ready, the rest of the album seals the deal. One thing about this band is that you can not really pin them down to any genre of metal. “Burn My Bridges” sounds like a European power metal song to include a scorching solo that was neo-classical in style and all shred. I think the fact that Eric AK has been the consistent driving force in this band and his vocal abilities allow them to go in different directions and still be who they are. Just when you think the album is going in a power metal direction, they hit you in the face with “Gates of Hell.” Even with a slayer like that the melodies shine through to make this heavy without being heavy for heavy’s sake. The soloing on this album needs to me pointed out because there is some serious shredding going on here. I really need to mention the closer, “Black Wings.” This track slays in so many ways. You have epic metal. You have speed metal. You have thrash metal. You have power metal. Adding the ridiculously good soloing is the cherry on top.
As a thrash fan in the eighties, I’m not sure why Flotsam and Jetsam‘s early stuff did not grab me like some others in that genre. However, they are on a new path and I am a huge fan of their last two albums and it seems like they still have a lot to say. Every metal fan should own this album!" - Metal-Rules.com
