  • Raccomdata Ricevuto Ritorno refomed and cut a shockingly good album called Il Pittore Volante.  A lot of these Italian bands from the 70s are reforming and offering up mediocre fare.  This wasn't the case with RRR.  They are now billed as La Nuova Raccomandata Ricevuto Ritorno.  This is a live recording from Elba in which they run through material from Per Un Mondo Di Cristallo, Il Pittore Volante, as well as a handful of covers.  I guess sometimes you can catch lightning in a bottle.

  • A new Glass Hammer is like a universal constant.  I can always expect exemplary old school prog rock.  For an old timer like myself Glass Hammer is right in my wheelhouse.  This is their 17th studio album (amazing!) .  If you are unfamiliar with the band you should know it revolves around the core of bassist Steve Babb and keyboardist Fred Schendel.  There have been a lot of musicians through the doors of their studio over the years but somehow they always seem to find an endless supply of them.  The line up seems to be fairly stable at the moment.  Salem Hill mainman Carl Groves handles lead vocals along with Susie Bogdanowicz returning as well.  Guitars are handled by Kamran Alan Shikoh and drums by Aaron Raulston.Glass Hammer music is a reverential amalgam of Yes, ELP, Kansas and what the hell throw in a little bit of Genesis.  Steve and Fred proudly wear their influences on their sleeves.  Want wicked keyboard pyrotechnics?  Fred brings the thunder.  In fact they all do.  The Breaking Of The World arrives with epic length tracks and audiophile quality sound.  I wouldn't want it any other way.  BUY OR DIE!

  • After the great international success of his last album "La quarta vittima" Fabio Zuffanti returns with a live in studio album. The album is the report of a tour that led to Fabio and his band around Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Canada. It summarizes twenty years of career of growing success and offers a kind of "best of" of his solo repertoire and than that of his bands Finisterre, la Maschera Di Cera and Höstsonaten.Zuffanti says: "During the concerts for "La quarta vittima Tour 2014" I wanted to realize a live album. Unfortunately, for a number of technical problems, we did not succeed but I told myself I had to do something to stop at least one of the gigs of this extraordinary band. In the absence of new concerts the best thing was to record an album "live in studio" with some of the songs that we played during the tour taken from "La quarta vittima" and other writing for Finisterre, Maschera Di Cera and Hostsonaten that I still feel very close to me.So, one day the whole group went to Hilary Audio Recording Studio and began playing live as we were in concert, unfortunately without an audience but with the same passion and intensity as ever. This is to close this period, say goodbye to our guitarist Matteo that leaves us to devote himself to the study of film music in Spain, thank our audience and prepare for the next steps."TRACKLISTIn LimineRainsuiteOrizzonte Degli EventiUna Sera D'InvernoLa Quarta VittimaNon Posso Parlare Più ForteLa Notte TrasparenteThe players:Martin Grice. • ONE OF A KIND TITLE FROM THE LASER'S EDGE ARCHIVE"A trully unusual US band from Boston, Fluttr Effect started at the dawn of the millenium simply as Fluttr, led by guitarist Troy Kidwell and marimba player Vessela Stoyanova.Drummer J Marchionna and cellist Valerie Thompson completed the original line-up, soon to be joined by singer Kara Trott.A 4-track eponymous EP was the first work by the group in 2003, followed a year later by their first full-length, independent release ''Trithemis festiva'', at the time when the group still carried the Fluttr name.As already said, Fluttr Effect are a strange group, considering the unusual instrumentation and the different, unrelated styles, appearing in their debut album, and if a label could describe them this would be Modern Art Rock. The unusual material starts off with the blend of edgy, heavy guitar riffs and solos with Chamber-like string arrangements, creating grandiose textures in a very modern way.But there are also elements from Jazz, Electronic and Ethnic Music to be found in this album, depending on the track, offering a really flexible and artistic work of its own character. The constant use of marimba next to the dynamic guitar work adds another charming dimension. The majority of the instrumental parts are really adventurous, often with an experimental KING CRIMSON-eque vibe mixed with nice Heavy Prog tunes, but the band manages to offer in general accesible and refined arrangements through the use of memorable choruses and the tapping heavier grooves.Kara Trott and her highly expressive voice is another reason to listen to this album.Really hard to end up with a succesful description.Maybe a cross between KARNATAKA, THE GATHERING and PAATOS would seal the deal, but again this album needs to be heard to be correctly appreciated. This is definitely a group and an album with a personal style, which simultaneously is quite enjoyable.Very intricate musicianship wrapped in smaller, memorable packages.Strongly recommended." - ProgArchives

  • Debut album from this Italian crossover band.  Secret Tales is not traditional rock progressivo italiano style of music.  This blends together symphonic rock, medieval and Celtic folk, and maybe even some subtle touches of metal around the edges (but barely).  This is a Black Widow Records release so expect an overlay of dark subtext.  Female vocals are in Italian and fit the ominous music perfectly.  There is an otherworldly ominous quality to the whole affair.  Its a concept piece and it would definitely help if you spoke Italian but the music by itself has a dark beauty."Secret tales of an enchanting journey that takes place over time in a kingdom disappeared from who knows how long ...Kings, queens, princes and princesses, fairies, witches and magical and grotesque creatures rotate with their stories in a fabulous location, where the figure of the demiurge-Unicorn overhangs and protects everything and everyone, from the monstrous Faust to the sweet Elf. Emotions without boundaries, to other infinite universes ... The charm and enchantment of soft and dreamy music, full of fabulous side dishes and lyrically supported by parts sung in Italian, English and French by Princess Tiziana Radis: the debut album of the Secret Tales is an imaginary sound that turns his gaze to the ancient traditions of Celtic folk-medieval, alternating dark atmosphere and refined symphonic progressive melodies… A work of great emotional impact !"

  • Its been some time since we've heard from Syndone.  This Italian symphonic band has come out with a new release and I have to say its most impressive.  The core band is simply a trio - Nik Comoglio (keyboards), Riccardo Ruggeri (vocals), and Francesco Pinetti (vibraphone).  They are rounded out with a couple of well known ringers - Marco Minnemann (drums) and John Hackett (flute).  First off Ruggeri has a wonderful voice.  While he doesn't have quite the same range as the late, great Francesco Di Giacomo he's definitely cut from the same cloth.  The keyboards of Comoglio drive the train and he's quite a talent.  I'm going to make the assumption that he's the main composer.  There is a symphonic element that transitions well with some fusion interludes.  Beautiful delicate classical passages are a key component.Overall this is one of the examples of "Rock Progressivo Italiano" I've heard in years.  Highly recommended.

  • "From December 1971 to April 1972, Carlos Santana and several other members of Santana toured with drummer/vocalist Buddy Miles, a former member of the Electric Flag, and Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys. The resulting live album contained both Santana hits ("Evil Ways") and Buddy Miles hits ("Changes"), plus a 25-minute, side-long jam. It was not, perhaps, the live album Santana fans had been waiting for, but at this point in its career, the band could do no wrong. The album went into the Top Ten and sold a million copies." - All Music Guide

  • Authorized vinyl edition, limited to 500 copies. This is one of those overlooked gems that only hardcore prog collectors know about and with good reason. The band was signed to the obscure Square Records label and purportedly only 1000 copies were pressed back in 1971. OK - so what hell does it sound like? Basically a head on collision between ITCOTCK King Crimson and The Moody Blues. The album is drenched in Mellotron. flute, and sax leads channeling Ian McDonald. Yeah its a concept album that you'll find a bit corny at this point but probably seemed like a great idea at the time. So the story ended for these guys in the typical fashion - bad management, bad decisions, and a bad contract. The band dissolved after the one album and the rest is history. Definitely up there with Spring, Cressida, Fantasy and their ilk. Apart from Czar and the later day Australian band The Moffs, I can't think of a band that bore such a strong musical similarity to the first iteration of Crimson. Highest recommendation.

  • This must be the 100th version of this great album to see CD.  This is a new digipak version on Cleopatra.  Remastered, it includes a bonus album - the rare Drum Circus "Magic Theatre" which was a precursor to Brainticket."Second album from this seminal Swiss psych band. Led by keyboardist Joel Vandroogenbroeck, Brainticket's overall sound is a bit hard to pinpoint. The band touches on psych but prog as well. One tends to think of them as a psych/krautrock band and that really isn't that too far off the mark. The band incorporates blissful tripped out serene moments juxtaposed by ripping lead guitar. Organ swirls, flute accents, and wasted female vocals are the order of the day...there is even a bit of a west coast psych feel that barely creeps through. I bet these guys would have gone down a ton at the old Fillmore West. The Brainticket catalog has been available as a budget line release from Bellaphon for many years."

  • Christina Booth is the charismatic vocalist for British symphonic rock band Magenta.  Her voice has always brought about comparisons to Annie Haslam (and in fact they recorded together).  Christina had a well documented successful battle with breast cancer.  It was during this time that she wrote the material for her second solo album.  The music doesn't have the complexity or full on "prog" nature but she is helped out by members of the prog community including Rob Reed, Chris Fry, JOhn Mitchell, Andy Tillison, and Theo Travis.  It would be difficult to call this commercial music.  I guess they call this adult alternative these days.  Its a great showcase for her wonderful vocal talents and is filled with tons of atmosphere.  Good late night listening.

  • 2006 release from this excellent Belgian quartet finds them shedding most of their earlier stoner/psych influences and going for a retro prog sound. Lots of Mellotron and winds evoke the feel of King Crimson circa ITCOTCK and Lizard. If you are a fan of Anekdoten's Vemod you need to hear this. Highly recommended.

  • In early 2014, Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) performed a series of concerts in Japan - doing complete run throughs of their classic albums.  This live recording captures their performance of L'Isola Di Niente (which some of you may know in its bastardized form as The World Became The World).  To the best of my knowledge some of these tunes have never been performed live before.  So who's left in PFM after all these years?  Franz Di Ciocco is still the drummer and he also handles vocals.  Patrick Djivas is a monster bassist.  Franco Mussida handles guitars.  The trio are augmented by Lucio Fabbri on violin (he has ducked in and out of the band over the years), Alessandro Scaglione on keyboards, and a second drummer in Roberto Gualdi.  Vinyl edition comes with the CD as a bonus.

  • New progressive rock/metal trio from the UK that has the chance to blow up big. The band goes for an epic sound with the core trio augmented by the "The Lost Orchestra". Melancholy seems to be the overall theme here reminding of Riverside, Opeth, Tool and even some Pink Floyd. It can get quite heavy at times but overall it would be safe to categorize this as progressive rock. There is the odd growly part that made me think of Opeth - not a bad thing. The symphonic parts are quite beautiful and sad at the same time - Riverside's "Loose Heart" would be an apt comparison. An emotional roller coaster ride with plenty of space and...yes...intricacy. If you like your prog drenched in thick atmosphere this one is going to crush your skull. Highly recommended.
