Included in the set are Shy Boy from Sheehan's band Talas, MacAlpine's The Stranger, Sherinian's Apocalypse 1470 B.C. and Dream Theater's A Change Of Seasons: The Crimson Sunrise."

  • "Let There Be Blood, Stormblåst MMV, more recently Battle Hymns MMXI, aren't exactly big success stories in the world of heavy metal. This rash of "re-recorded classics' has seemed more like embarrassing cash grabs and/ or desperate contractual out-clauses. The only example of severe ass-kicking that came from large-scale re-recording for me has been Vader's XXV compilation, which is tasty. The latest band to do so is Tarot, personal faves and the granddaddies of Finnish heavy metal, reworking their less-known 1986 debut The Spell of Iron.It works extremely well, considering the poor track record of such attempts and the disparity between Tarot's dual-guitar, single-vocalist scrappy metal of the '80s, and their dual-vocalist, single-guitar mammoth sound of Crows Fly Black and Gravity of Light. The album features a huge guitar sound for Zachary, with even 'Never Forever' sounding a lot heavier than the Iron Maiden copycat original. The athletic scale runs punctuating the track still sound nice and sharp, and Zachary does a fine job of flexing his ability in various styles throughout the record.Things have been slowed down in places, possibly to allow the release to make more sense alongside the band's recent discography. No problem. Opener 'Midwinter Nights' sets a mid-paced groove for much of its runtime, but this makes the neoclassical shredding of its halfway solo even more exciting. 'Love's Not Made For My Kind' is slowed down and expanded into a crawling epic. Although the lyrics and melody suit the pace, the twinkling keyboards throughout prohibit the new, creaking mid-paced riffs from letting it be as awesome as 'Hell Knows' or 'Warhead'. Without the Nightwish style synths it MIGHT sound a lot cooler, but unfortunately they are all I can hear. The title track is no longer the simple, breathless metal anthem it once was, but rather an eerie mid-paced track that gives the lyrics and tune a more foreboding quality. The chorus, which remains at a galloping pace, still gets the heart thumping - but now with a more sinister vibe. It doesn't always work - 'Dancing on the Wire', which was an absolute standout on the original, floats past here, possibly due to its acoustic chorus and now rather relaxed vocals which sap the tension from the composition.Tommi Salmela took his time to grow on me, until the release of Gravity of Light actually, but now I dig this guy's vocals big time. His high wail gives a great contrast to Marco's gruff howl. He's had a workout with these songs onstage, but here he's allowed to bellow in unison as well as line-by-line with Marco in the climaxes of 'Back in the Fire' and 'Wings of Darkness' (the former ending with a huge ad-lib roar from both, awesome), and it sounds as epic as it did on songs like 'Satan is Dead'. I think Salmela's voice has even improved, he just slays when he opens 'Never Forever' and sings on the title track, and often rivals Marco for the accolade of most insane sounding Tarot singer on this and other tracks. Marco, meanwhile, who has developed a more varied and above all intimidating vocal presence since For the Glory of Nothing, puts in a far superior performance here to the original (something which I don't think can be said about any other re-recorded album anywhere). He does 'Things That Crawl At Night' solo, and sounds as if he's stood alone on stage in an opera house, he's that powerful, not to mention dramatic.Aside from Salmela, the greatest necessary contrast to navigate in recording this was likely the fact that Tarot has had only one guitarist since the mid '90s, and their songs have been written for such a setup. The bass has played a bigger and bigger role since the days of the '90s, and the grooving sound of recent albums now pervades these old songs. They adapt well, with slight amendments to a number of riffs giving a more lumbering, heavy sound than the melody-dependent originals. This is also the first time the band have substituted early dual-guitar attacks with keyboard lines on record as they do during concerts, and on 'Back in the Fire' in particular it sounds great, giving a threatening modern twist to what was a decidedly old school sounding track. Now it fits right in with 'Crawlspace' and 'Traitor!'All in all, a number of tracks actually sound better, due to the heavier sound, the tendency toward ominousness the band has built into their sound over the last decade or so pervading through, and the fantastic vocals. 'Pharao' is melodic as it ever was, the tense riffs sounding unbelievable in this reimagining, and surpasses the original due to Zachary being far tighter and heavier than back in the '80s. 'Wings of Darkness', the band's signature song, is now assisted by a hammond organ and the most outrageous vocal performance on the album (possibly by Tarot in years), both singers sounding totally unhinged and fucking awesome over the newly throaty interpretation of the addictive guitar riffs. It's only 'Love's Not Made For My Kind', 'Dancing on the Wire' and the bizarre acoustic rendering of 'De Mortui Nil Nisi Bene' (which while being cool and catchy, doesn't really make sense here) which fail to impact in quite the same way.Somewhat sacrilegiously, I've enjoyed a good number of these better than their original incarnations. The original album should still be bought first (for context, or as a friend of mine would put it, for awesome), and I'd even recommend Undead Indeed for a first taste of Tarot blasting out their oldies with their current lineup and sound. Loyal Tarot troopers definitely need this record. It's received a lot of attention from me and is by far the best attempt I've heard at reimagining an old album in its entirety. However, just because this turned out good, does NOT mean Venom and Slayer have an excuse to give me Black Metal MMXII and Reign in Blood MMXII next year." - Metal Archives

The scenario is an observation by an angel who resides in a mysterious tower, looking down on all this ongoing perpetual insanity, yet unable to reach out and help.The band is very much back to their cinematic and melodic symphonic rock best, but with a heavier edge no doubt honed while on tour for the past year.   • One of the greatest progressive rock albums of all time available again. Self-released in 1992, this Swedish ensemble shook the prog rock universe with a dose of musical adrenaline. Steeped in the sounds of 70s progressive rock, Anglagard created an amazing pastiche that was heavily (and obviously) influenced by King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Schicke Fuhrs Frohling, and Camel. The album makes all the right moves and is a cornerstone of any prog collection. The instrumentation consists of dual guitars, bass, drums, flute, and awesome keyboards. This isn't just one stop shopping at Mellotrons-R-Us. Tomas Jonson also plays two Hammonds, synths, church organ, and more. The interplay between the guitarists and flautist is phenomenal as well. It's like Fripp jamming with Andy Latimer somewhere deep in the Swedish forest! Hybris consists of 4 long tracks - 1 instrumental and 3 with minimal vocals. The band doesn't seem to want to keep this in print continuously so availability comes and goes over the years. This is a new edition in a digipak and features a bonus track.   • "Ever since rising from oblivion with new Greek goddess Maxi Nil, Visions of Atlantis is back on track to become one of the most important bands in symphonic metal. Within eight months of releasing its comeback album "Delta" this past February, the band already has a brand new EP entitled "Maria Magdalena." Over the years, EP releases have notoriously consisted of throw away tracks recorded during a full-length writing process or demo tracks from years past, but "Maria Magdelena" is worthy of attention.The band chooses to live dangerously by naming and commencing the EP with a cover track, especially one of an 80's pop song. However, the result is a bombastic symphonic metal rendition of the 1985 Sandra hit "Maria Magdalena" that could easily pass off as a Visions of Atlantis original. This interpretation outdoes the former in so many ways and on so many levels, most notably with far superior vocals by Nil and Mario Plank. After further review of the original, it sounded a distorted chord shy of being symphonic metal itself.The EP is also home to two tracks that can easily be considered the best material the band has composed to date, "Melancholia" and "Change of Tides." Both rain "tides" of mellifluous hooks swaddled in the Visions Of Atlantis brand of "supple heaviness." Both Nil and Plank really flash the pipes, Plank in the former and Nil in the latter. "Distant Shores" is equal in its melody and just as strong as either of the aforementioned tracks, just a little less theatrical. The maturation of sound and song writing really shows since the days of "Morning In Atlantis."I normally would have balked at the inclusion of "Last Shut Of Your Eyes," the slow starting tasty rocker that originally appeared on the band's 2004 release "Cast Away." However, upon listening to the re-recording, the sound is so much fuller with the addition Nil's little background inflections. Her vocals are much less classically operatic than that of former vocalist Nicole Bogner. In comparison, Bogner's version seems abrasive to Nil's sweet and soaring one. Rounding out the EP is the slumbersome ballad "Beyond Horizon, The Poem, Pt. II" (the sequel to "The Poem" on the 2007 release "Trinity"), which represents a typical ballad of the genre. Its placement at the conclusion of this release was perfect.Visions of Atlantis is right on the edge of stardom, ready to spread its wings and fly from the safety of the Nightwish nest to exert its own influence throughout world of symphonic metal." - MetalUnderground.com

  • "As we’ve been chronicling all year long, 2013 has been a great year for Norwegian progressive metal with some excellent progressive power metal from Illusion Suite, Tellus Requiem and Pellek, the new album by the long-running prog metal band Divided Multitude, the fantastic new album by Leprous and the exciting debut by Withem (you can read our review here).  Now, into that great mix the young band Vicinity has just released their debut full -length album, Awakening and it easily stands with the best of what their countrymen have produced this year. The band works in a decidedly melodic and dramatic fashion anchored around the wonderful voice of Alexander Lykke, the multi-faceted guitars of Kim-Marius Olsen and the powerful drumming of Frode Lillevold.  Interestingly there are no keyboards on the album (except for a few background sounds for effects) which wasn’t readily apparent to me at first because the songs are so well written and the vocal melodies are so strong. Olsen multi-tracks soft and harder textures to really give the album a rich sound.  The album has a great full sound and was mastered by the prolific Jens Bogren.Awakening is an hour long album but only has six songs.  Three are in the 11-14 minute range and the other three are between 5-6 minutes. The longer songs are not really more complex, but just feel necessary to the structure of each song which is really a testament to the band’s composition style -- the band will do a long song if warranted but works well in both long and short song formats.  The album begins with Mass Delusion which starts as a high-energy rocker but has a great instrumental mid-section that propels the song to its energetic conclusion. Opportunities Lost is the longest song on the album at over 14 minutes and is a deceptively simple song that consistently builds tension throughout the piece, alternates between short instrumental interludes, both soft and hard, and has a great vocal melody that ends in a wonderfully dramatic finale. Again, it’s fairly simple in structure but is so well written that I couldn’t believe it was as long as it was.  I was reminded of what great neo-progressive bands like IQ often do so well -- take a great idea and vary and expand on it to great emotional conclusions.  Across The River is a shorter, five minute song and is mostly a ballad that builds in intensity throughout to a powerful finale.   Walk All The Way is an 11-minute song that’s easily my favorite on the album as its got some of the most beautiful vocals on Awakening, has the heaviest section on the album right in the middle (complete with some harsher vocals for contrast and intensity) before building to a wonderfully majestic finale.  Olsen also really shines here as well with some great emotional soloing.  The Time For Change is next and it’s yet another amazing power ballad that shows, yet again how well this band can create drama and excitement.  The album ends with the 11 minute album title song that has a fairly heavy opening section but ends with a stunningly beautiful epic finish.  Honestly there’s not a weak moment on this album and if dramatic and emotionally affective progressive metal is your cup of tea, this album will hit you hard.Awakening is a really, really solid album that has so much going for it. It’s got a great, joyously youthful spirit and is decidedly focused on the emotional content instead of trying to wow the listener with technicality.   Vicinity is primarily a band of great melodic songwriters and they have the perfect vocalist in Lykke to carry out their vision of exciting  progressive music and if they continue on this path could really make some waves in this great genre." - Prog Metal Zone

  • "There's nothing subtle about Infinita Symphonia and their approach to power metal; after all they are from Italy. Their sophomore effort, simply self-titled, finds the band stirring up more bombastic arrangements with big riffage to grand orchestral layers to large vocal arrangements.Yet within all this lavish wall of sound, Infinita Symphonia is still able to offer some good rock groove, as on If I Could Go Back, and elements of progressive power metal, as with The Last Breath, Limbo, the two longest pieces, but also Fly, by example. That latter song also features a guest vocal appearance by the talent Michael Kiske (Helloween, Unisonic, et al).Yet, it's not always flash and spectacle. Following Fly is the instrumental piece, Interlude, which tones things down with more delicate play. This follows into the greater part of Waiting For a Day of Happiness, which puts Luca Micioni vocals at the fore. Of course, it eventually comes to a crescendo at the end. Alternatively, the anthem In Your Eyes, featuring a duet with Daniela Gualano, remains mostly smooth and steady. All this amounts to nearly 74 minutes of music, nothing subtle about that either.   • I'm going to get straight to the point.  If you are a fan of female fronted metal you must own this album.  The Human Contradiction is a complete triumph.  It finds the band returning a bit to their roots.  There are still poppy elements - that's part of their core sound - but there is a heaviness that will remind you of Lucidity.  Nightwish's Marco Hietala returns contributing on clean vocals. Also back is Orphanage vocalist George Oosthoek who is one of the best growlers in the metal scene.  Arch Enemy vocalist Alissa White-Gluz makes a guest appearance.Timo Somers' guitar riffs are chunkier, Charlotte's voice is impeccable as always, and Martijn's keyboards are simply epic.  The album was recorded at Studio Fredman and sounds massive.  Weaving the whole album together is a sci-fi theme borrowed from the writings of Octavia Butler.This is an album filled with a enough earworm hooks to drive you crazy but at the same time its heavy!  For my taste its a top 10 album for 2014.  BUY OR DIE!Limited edition 2CD mediabook edition.  The bonus CD contains 2 additional new studio tracks as well as live tracks and two orchestral versions of tracks from The Human Contradiction.  Essential.

  • While the Rising Force album was not Malmsteen's first entre into the metal world it certainly turned it upside down.  The Swedish guitarist was heavily influenced by Uli Roth and Ritchie Blackmore as well as classical composer/violinist Niccolo Paganini.  Essentially his extreme virtuosity defined the "neoclassical metal" sound and has remained a signature of his ever since.The Rising Force debut featured a killer lineup - Barriemore Barlow (Jethro Tull) on drums, Jens Johansson (keys), and Jeff Scott Soto (vocals),  Malmsteen handled all guitar and bass parts as well as the Moog Taurus pedals.  Very much a classic.  Highly recommended.

  • Willowglass is the vehicle for British multi-instrumentalist Andrew Marshall.  He plays guitar, keys, and bass.  Accompaniment is courtesy of Hans Jorg Schmitz on drums and Steve Unruh on violin, flute, and guitars.The music is all instrumental and harkens back to the classic British progressive sounds of the 70s.  The album kicks off with the 20 minute "A House Of Cards Pt 1", which is a pure love letter to the Mellotron.  Reminds me a bit of King Crimson's Lizard.  The music never gets overly heavy.  Marshall tends to rely on acoustic guitar quite a bit and Unruh's violin figures quite prominently.  We always say they don't make 'em like they used to but apparently they still do.  If you miss the glory days of Genesis and Camel you need to fill that spot in your collection.  Highly recommended.

  • "In some ways, Styx was America's answer to Queen. The Chicago quintet never ascended to the ranks of rock-and-roll royalty, as did their English counterparts, nor are they held in as high a regard today. Nevertheless, Styx fulfilled a Midwestern American hunger for high-flown fantasy typified on Pieces of Eight with songs like Dennis DeYoung and James Young's "I'm Okay" and "Lords of the Rings," with their elaborate arrangements, soaring vocal harmonies, and lyrical pretensions. In quite another direction, guitarist Tommy Shaw writes about basic human needs and working-class values in "Blue Collar Man," while his song "Sing for the Day" is a pleasant air, and "Renegade" a hard-charging rocker. Styx may have seemed somewhat schizophrenic on Pieces of Eight but their legions of fans diminished not a whit, making the album the band's second multiplatinum effort in a row, following The Grand Illusion."
