This is the second album from the Dutch post-progressive band.  The music of A Liquid Landscape has a very cinematic feel.  This is a band that is more about emotion than complexity.  If you enjoy Pineapple Thief and Gazpacho you'll find much to dig into here.

  • Stumbled across a reference to this Italian band on a forum and really enjoyed what I heard.  Bloody things cost a fortune and I was disappointed to discover that they are in fact CD-Rs.  Caveat Emptor.  At  least the music is great.Castle Fusion is a six piece ensemble.  The band has phenomenal chops and are not afraid to show it off.  The music also has a real sense of maturity.  I don't know anything about these guys but they sound like seasoned veterans.  The music definitely falls in the realm of "Rock Progressivo Italiano".  Vocals are predominantly in English although there are a couple of tunes with Italian vocals (and two instrumentals).  Its a really nice blend of symphonic keys, flute, sax, jazz-inflected guitar leads and a killer rhythm section.  These guys can really blow.  Fans of Banco, PFM, and Osanna should check them out.  Highly recommended.

To celebrate the pre-release of the album back in March of 2012 they opened a concert by the Dutch band Focus, which is quite an achievement for an unknown band.When I say Progressive Metal you’ll have to forget the label a little bit (even if it’s really difficult to do so) , because Imagery turns out to be different. Forget about all the Dream Theater copies you hear every day!The Inner Journey (2012) was self-released by the band and shows in its 8 tracks and 43 minutes a perfect balance between the Heavy Metal and the Progressive Rock.If you can’t believe me, just push play in the first track of The Inner Journey (2012) and you’ll get what I mean. ‘Fourth Secret’ is instrumental and has everything. It is heavy but full of melodies. When ‘Imagery’, the track, comes in, you hardly notice that the track changed. Harsh vocals with dissonant melodies, the most interesting instrumental passages and the epic ending.It’s even weird to listen to such a good debut. It’s far from common that bands get first albums as good as The Inner Journey (2012).In the time they were recording the album they were just a trio: Joceir Bertoni (vocals and guitars), Ricardo Fanucci (bass) and Luciano Neves (drums). But they were smart enough to call Henrique Loureiro to record keyboards on almost all the tracks. Right now Henrique is officialy in the band.I said it was a smart move cause the mix between the heavy riffs and the heaviness in ‘Perception’ are ‘broken’ by the keyboards, which is just perfect!Fourth track ‘Start The War’ begins and we hardly notice the passing of the tracks, another smart move by the band. Or maybe the album is just good enough to make me just listen and go with the songs.While ‘The Rain’ is probably the most heavy song on the album, ‘Show Me’ is the lighter one. It just comes to show how the band can be good at both sides of their sound.The album is finished by the heavy ‘Stranger’ and the twisted ‘Last’ with its final words read in a somber voice.According to their Bio the band wanted to unite two of their passions: Heavy Metal and Progressive Rock.   • I thought Felix Martin's debut was insane but he's taken it to the next level with this one...If you are unfamiliar with Felix Martin that will probalby change soon.  He plays a custom made 14(!!) string guitar.  His musical background has strong roots in jazz but its clear he's able to feel comfortable with different styles.  His approach to this unusual guitar includes tapping as well as legato runs.  If you have seen any videos of him playing live its really something to see.  The Scenic Album is a trio affair - Martin is supported by Nathan Navarro on bass and Chapman Stick, and the mighty Marco Minnemann is behind the drum kit (ex-Behold The Arctopus' Charlie Zeleny is on the last track).  I don't think anyone other than Marco could tackle this material.  Martin's music touches on so many different genres - metal, prog rock, latin and fusion - all within a single composition.  Prepare to have your jaw drop!

  • Third album from this talented Ohio based band arrives with some twists. They have enlisted Yngwie Malmsteen vocalist Mark Boals (kind of a wild card pick) and there is a definite Christian slant to the lyrics. My tolerance for bible thumpin' is pretty low. Syzygy comes close to the threshold but don't cross it - I guess because the music is so strong. The linchpin of the band is guitarist Carl Baldassarre who continues to be quite tasteful. He can get crunchy and heavy but displays roots in classical guitar. Have no fear - there is plenty of instrumental symphonic rock firepower as in the past. Oh yeah lots of tuneage here - over 77 minutes.

  • The third album from the French instrumental ensemble led by multi-instrumentalist Francois Thollot.  Scherzoo's instrumentation is pretty straight forward - sax, guitar, bass, and drums.  Thollot is the bassist and also provides keyboards.  As you would expect from any of Alain Lebon's Soleil imprints, there are undercurrents of zeuhl but it doesn't bash you over the head with it.  Instead you get a very intricate hybrid of Canterbury influenced prog and jazz rock.  Perhaps "03" is a bit jazzier than on the previous efforts.  As a bonus you get three tracks from Thollot's other ensemble Dissonata, in which he plays drums.  Its quite a different animal all together - incorporating piano, hurdy gurdy, bass, and cello.

  • Woodenhead are one of the great US fusion/prog bands you may not be familiar with.  For the past forty years the band has been ensconced in New Orleans rarely straying outside of the Louisiana area.  The quartet is led by virtuoso guitarist Jimmy Robinson (who you may have seen in that recent AARP commercial!).To encapsulate Woodenhead's sound is actually pretty easy - take 3/4 parts Dixie Dregs and add 1/4 part Happy The Man.  Shake and stir.  Top it off with some local spicy cajun flavor.So while you may not have heard of Woodenhead in your part of the world, they are quite well known in New Orleans.  They have performed there continuously playing at all the local haunts and festivals.  To commemorate the band's 40th anniversary the band has dipped into the archives.  They have released highlights from a gig recorded at the legendary Tipitina's in December 1993, mixed from live tapes previously forgotten and recently unearthed.  Expect a white hot set of cajun fusion.  Highly recommended.

  • "The musical transition that seemed to have just begun with Fear of Music came to fruition on Talking Heads' fourth album, Remain in Light. "I Zimbra" and "Life During Wartime" from the earlier album served as the blueprints for a disc on which the group explored African polyrhythms on a series of driving groove tracks, over which David Byrne chanted and sang his typically disconnected lyrics. Remain in Light had more words than any previous Heads record, but they counted for less than ever in the sweep of the music. The album's single, "Once in a Lifetime," flopped upon release, but over the years it became an audience favorite due to a striking video, its inclusion in the band's 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense, and its second single release (in the live version) because of its use in the 1986 movie Down and Out in Beverly Hills, when it became a minor chart entry. Byrne sounded typically uncomfortable in the verses ("And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife/And you may ask yourself, well, how did I get here?"), which were undercut by the reassuring chorus ("Letting the days go by"). Even without a single, Remain in Light was a hit, indicating that Talking Heads were connecting with an audience ready to follow their musical evolution, and the album was so inventive and influential, it was no wonder. As it turned out, however, it marked the end of one aspect of the group's development and was their last new music for three years." - Allmusic Guide

  • Bad ass fusion session put together by Dixie Dregs keyboardist T Lavitz. The quartet is filled out by heavyweights Dennis Chambers (drums), Jeff Berlin (bass), David Fiuczynski (guitars). I'm not sure how much more I need to say about this - just look at the names and you know what to expect. For my personal taste the guy who really steps forward is Fiuczynski who impresses me more each time I hear something he's a part of. Some of the playing on this disc is so insane I just have to laugh. Highly recommended.

  • Remastered edition with bonus tracks."The debut Jefferson Airplane album was dominated by singer Marty Balin, who wrote or co-wrote all the original material and sang most of the lead vocals in his heartbreaking tenor with Paul Kantner and Signe Anderson providing harmonies and backup. (Anderson's lead vocal on "Chauffeur Blues" indicated she was at least the equal of her successor, Grace Slick, as a belter.) The music consisted mostly of folk-rock love songs, the most memorable of which were "It's No Secret" and "Come up the Years." (There was also a striking version of Dino Valente's "Get Together" recorded years before the Youngbloods' hit version.) Jorma Kaukonen already displayed a talent for mixing country, folk, and blues riffs in a rock context, and Jack Casady already had a distinctive bass sound. But the Airplane of Balin-Kantner-Kaukonen-Anderson-Casady-Spence is to be distinguished from the Balin-Kantner-Kaukonen-Casady-Slick-Dryden version of the band that would emerge on record five months later chiefly by Balin's dominance. Later, Grace Slick would become the group's vocal and visual focal point. On Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, the Airplane was Balin's group. (Jefferson Airplane Takes Off was released as RCA 3584 on August 15, 1966. It was reissued as RCA 66797 on January 30, 1996, as a CD that contained both the stereo and mono versions, and that added back the track "Runnin' 'Round This World," which had been deleted from all but initial copies due to the sexual and perceived drug references of the line "The nights I've spent with you have been fantastic trips."   • "David Rhodes has released his second solo album. Not a solo album, actually. Things are a bit different than with Bittersweet. The core musicians who were with David in 2009 and went on tour with him later have formed the trio that recorded the new album. They are David Rhodes himself on guitars, Ged Lynch on drums and Charlie Jones on bass. When they found all other names either lacking in or overflowing with meaning they settled on "Rhodes" and also gave the album that name.The sessions at which they recorded the songs in early 2013 were paid for through crowdfunding via the PledgeMusic website.  Though that took a slow start it soon took off and the required sum was made up quickly. Many Genesis fans contributed, as did the genesis-news.com themselves. No wonder that the GNC folk paid special attention as to how the project came along – after all, they were personally involved, as it were...With this support the band recorded a dozen songs, ten of which made it to the album. In Rhodes it is David Rhodes alone who wrote the songs and the lyrics. The music is much tighter than on Bittersweet, though. There is only bass, guitar and drums – no keyboards, no strings, no frills.What has been carried over from Bittersweet are the depth and the quality. Strength and magic are probably good terms to describe the poles between which the music moves on Rhodes. There are straight rock numbers as well as a melancholy waltz and groovy guitar pop.  David Rhodes' instrument plays a central role, of course. It is put to use in lots of different ways (frequently very loudly so) and receives the typical Rhodes tinkering. The rhythm group is at times energetic, at others sensitive, and Tchad Blake's accomplished mix adds that subtle special bit to the individual moods.The lyrics have something of the thoughtful way of remorse and of picking oneself up again that we know from Bittersweet, but here they are a bit less striking. David Rhodes' phrasing seems quite unusual at times; the phrase „slipping by squeeze between the glass“ is pronounced contrary to all usual stress patterns. That actually makes it all the more interesting.The album cover is another interesting thing – it shows a cow wearing a strap-on elephant trunk. David Rhodes explains it as a playful and surreal motive that brings up the question of identity: Can  identity be changed? Are all attempts to do so merely a camouflage? Perhaps cows do dream of the savannah and the elephant's trunk is how they live out their dreams. In any case he wanted something colourful that would catch the eye.If I Could Empty My HeadThe opener is a quick rock number with a light and driving rhythm and guitar lick, strong overdubs and a howling solo in the middle. The lyrics are vaguely self-contemplatory. The song showcases much of what the listener will encounter elsewhere on the album.Grinding WheelThe second song is a grooving complaint, though the lyrics read more like a set of instructions. The rhythm track fits well to this; it is a bit aseptic, subdued and cool, while the guitar solo on the other hand saws loudly.Ship Of FoolsAn eerie sequence of harmonies – it lulls you in comfortably yet it is subtly disconcerting at the same time. This is countered by an almost unrestrained chorus. The lyrics tell the familiar story of the ship of life that will sail into destruction without a helmsman. Rich atmospheres make the song very engaging.You Are The North WindThe strong trio can do sensible, too. Demure instrumentation, a clever rhythm line and word associations paint a broad picture of easy, passionate longing. Acoustic, percussive, warm.Monkey On My BackThe straightest rock number on the album. Big grooving guitar and staccatos from both the bass and the drums drive this piece forward. It is almost hypnotic in its simplicity. As far as the content is concerned, Monkey On My Back continues Monster, Monster from Bittersweet to a certain degree.Waggle DanceDavid Rhodes played this song on the Bittersweet tour. A swinging foundation gets your feet a-tapping and takes you into a sexy chat-up number. The lyrics knit amusing double entendres that fit the bees' waggle dance as well as human mating rituals.TimeA gentle waltz. Acoustic guitars. Despite rather remorseful lyrics about a "time" that was "not on our side" the music exudes much imperturbability. With a regretful undertone. A confusing song that wins over its listeners perhaps even because of its inner calm.Three Is EverythingThis may well be the song on Rhodes where David contemplates his own life. He sings about a family growing, about years passing – and the enduring dream of a place full of peace and comfort. Add playful choir embellishments and gently advancing, simple guitar sounds. Three Is Everything is the song on Rhodes that has the most grace, placidity and acceptance of life.My Blue BalloonA less flamboyant song. The blue ballon is to fly around the world and tell of the things it sees. It does so with static melodies and a chorus that does not stand out much from the verses. In the middle the song almost explodes.Be MineA thoughtful piece at the end that still exudes shy optimism. Tentative and choppy verses are followed by a longing, gently rocking chorus that moves into a brute guitar solo with which the album ends. The last thing you hear is the guitar being unplugged from the amp.All in all...The album is more recalcitrant than its predecessor, but Rhodes offers a big range of moods and thoughts. Reducing the music to a trio has directed it in the direction of Wave. Those who found Bittersweet Gabriel-ese in a way will now fall silent." - Genesis News
